Collection: Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru

Bonnes-Mares is one of the great Grand Cru vineyards in Côte de Nuits, the heart of Bourgogne in eastern France. The appellation was classified as Grand Cru in 1936 and covers around 15 hectares spanning two communes: the majority lies in Chambolle-Musigny, while a smaller part belongs to Morey-Saint-Denis. Together with Musigny, Bonnes-Mares is one of only two Grand Cru in Chambolle-Musigny.

The wine is red and made exclusively from Pinot Noir. It is an appellation with a fixed, legally defined boundary, so every bottle from here has its origin in precisely this vineyard. That gives a wine with a clear sense of its provenance, and the style is more powerful and more tannic than a typical Chambolle-Musigny.

Part of the explanation lies in the soil. The vineyard holds two different soil types: terres blanches in the upper part, a calcareous marl, and terres rouges further down, where there is more clay. The upper soils contribute aromatics and minerality, while the lower ones provide structure and depth. Together they create a wine that unites finesse with weight, and which ranks among the most classic expressions of what Côte de Nuits stands for.

Bonnes-Mares is a wine that rewards patience. A well-made bottle can develop over anything from several years up towards two decades, during which the young tannins soften and the more complex, mature nuances emerge. It is one of the red Grand Cru wines where it truly makes sense to let the bottle rest before you open it.

At Copenhagen Wine we carry wine from this part of France, and Bonnes-Mares represents the classic, red side of Bourgogne. If you are looking for a wine with depth, finesse and a clear anchoring in its place of origin, this Grand Cru vineyard points towards the core of what the region can do.
