Collection: Mouratón

Mouratón is a red grape variety from north-western Spain, and it is probably best known under its other name, Garnacha Tintorera. It is a grape with a broader identity than just the local one, and that gives it an interesting place among the Galician wines. With us you find it exclusively from Spain, and particularly from the appellation Ribeira Sacra, where it goes into red blends together with the region's other grape varieties.

Ribeira Sacra is the area we carry the most Mouratón wines from. Here the grape is grown on steep terraces along the rivers, and it contributes colour and structure to the red cuvées. If you are fond of Spanish red wines with character and a clear rooting in their origin, this is where you should look.

Beyond Ribeira Sacra, Mouratón also appears elsewhere in Galicia. It is a permitted red grape variety in the appellation Rías Baixas, which is otherwise best known for its white wines, and it is moreover grown in Valdeorras. You also find it in wines produced under the designation Valle del Miño-Ourense IGP. This testifies to a grape variety that thrives in several places across the green, Atlantic-influenced north-western Spain.

Mouratón is rarely used as a single varietal and most often goes into blends, where it plays together with other local grape varieties. That makes it a part of the Galician wine tradition more than a star in its own right, and precisely for that reason it is worth getting to know its name and its synonym. So when you see Garnacha Tintorera on a label, it is the same grape. If you are looking for a bottle to start with, our Spanish red wines from Ribeira Sacra are a good starting point for discovering what this grape variety can add to a glass.
