Collection: Duoro DOC

Douro DOC is the appellation for the still, unfortified wines from the Douro Valley in northern Portugal, that is, the same delimited area that also gives the world port wine. Where port is a fortified wine, Douro DOC covers the dry reds and whites from the valley. It is a piece of wine history in itself: Douro and Alto Douro were the world's first formally demarcated and regulated wine region, established in 1756, and the Alto Douro vineyards are today on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The area is divided into three sub-regions, Baixo Corgo, Cima Corgo and Douro Superior, each contributing its own expression from the valley's steep terraces. The grape palette here is remarkably broad, and Douro grows a very large number of different varieties. Among the important native red grapes you will find Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz (which is Tempranillo), Tinta Barroca and Tinto Cão. On the white wine side, grapes such as Gouveio, Viosinho, Rabigato and Malvasia Fina play the leading role.

It is this combination of old vineyards, many grape varieties and a dramatic landscape that gives the wines of Douro DOC their distinctive character. The reds are often blends of several native grapes and carry the valley's warmth and structure, while the whites offer a fresher side of the region.

At Copenhagen Wine we carry wines from Douro DOC, where you can meet the Portuguese grapes in their dry, still form. If you want to explore more widely, you can browse further in our selection from Douro and the rest of Portugal.
