Collection: Gevrey-Chambertin

Gevrey-Chambertin is one of the most classic names in Bourgogne. It is a village appellation (village AOC) in the northern part of Côte de Nuits, spread across the communes of Gevrey-Chambertin and Brochon, and the designation was created in 1936. It is also the largest village appellation in all of Côte de Nuits, so there is both breadth and depth to explore here.

Here red wine is made from Pinot Noir, the grape that carries all of Côte de Nuits. The village level is the broad commune level that sits below premier cru and Grand Cru, and that is precisely what makes these wines an ideal place to get to know the style. You meet Pinot Noir as it unfolds in one of Bourgogne's most renowned corners, without having to go all the way up into the most exclusive tiers.

It is worth knowing that the commune holds nine Grand Cru vineyards: Chambertin and eight others with Chambertin in the name. They are independent appellations and thus not part of the village wine, but they say something about the reputation and class attached to the name. When you drink a Gevrey-Chambertin at village level, you are tasting a terroir that has earned its status over generations.

In terms of style, Gevrey-Chambertin is known for producing wines with structure and a certain fullness by Burgundian standards, and it is a fine entry point for both the curious and the more experienced Bourgogne lover. At Copenhagen Wine we carry wines from Gevrey-Chambertin, which lies in Bourgogne in eastern Frankrig. If you are choosing, you get provenance assurance and a style that balances elegance and depth, and that suits both a good meal and a quiet evening with time to let the bottle unfold.
