Collection: White wine

White wine is most often made from green grapes, and unlike red wine the juice usually ferments without contact with the skins. That is precisely why white wine takes on its pale colour and has little or no tannin. Instead it is the freshness and acidity that carry the wine, and that make it so rewarding to have at the table. White wine can also be made from blue grapes, provided the juice is pressed quickly off the skins so the colour stays pale.

The style spans widely. At one end you find the crisp, light and mineral wines, where the acidity stands out clearly. At the other end you have the full-bodied, creamy wines that have been fermented or aged in oak barrels, which adds more body and discreet notes of vanilla and butter. Among the most widespread white wine grapes are Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Grigio and Chenin Blanc, and the range between them is a big part of the pleasure of exploring the category.

At Copenhagen Wine the majority of our white wines come from Italy, where we carry a broad selection from, among others, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Toscana, Campania, Marche and Sicilien, as well as the alpine Valle d'Aosta. If you want to delve into the white classics, we also have a solid footing in Bourgogne, where Chardonnay truly shows what a great white wine can do. From Germany we carry wines where Riesling sets the standard for freshness and finesse, and from Spain you will find white wines from Ribeira Sacra.

White wine is far from being just a summer thing. The crisp and mineral type suits shellfish and light lunches, while the full-bodied, barrel-aged wines can easily hold their own against a richer dish all year round. Just remember to serve it chilled, so the freshness gets to unfold. If you fancy taking a more geographical approach, you can also explore our selection from Italien.
