Lombardiet lies in northern Italy and is one of the country's largest and most populous regions. It is an area of great agricultural breadth, where rice cultivation, dairy production and famous cheeses such as Grana Padano, Gorgonzola, Robiola and Taleggio loom large. In terms of wine, the region maintains a more modest volume than its size would suggest, but in return there is a remarkable breadth. Lombardiet contains seventeen DOC zones spread across a landscape that ranges from glacial basins and alpine foothills in the north to the Padana plain in the south, where the river Po and tributaries from the alpine lakes shape the soil.
It is precisely this geographical variation that yields wines in many styles, and at Copenhagen Wine we carry wines from several corners of the region. In the southwest you will find Oltrepò Pavese, Lombardiet's most important wine zone and one of Italy's most productive DOCs, known for a versatile selection of reds, whites and sparkling wines alike. To the north lies Valtellina, where nebbiolo is grown on steep terraces and produces elegant red wines with good acidity and finesse from the cooler climate of the mountains.
Around Lake Garda fresh white wines are made, where the proximity to the water and the shifting soil conditions pull the style in a crisp and fresh direction. Together this paints a picture of an area that can offer both light, lively wines for the everyday table and more structured reds for slightly larger occasions.
If you want to taste your way further through the Italian landscape, you can explore our entire selection from Italy. And if you have developed a taste for the northern nebbiolo wines or the fresh whites, you can dive into grapes such as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, which thrive in several places in the cooler northern Italy.
