Collection: Volnay

Volnay is one of the most classic appellations for red wine in Bourgogne, located in Côte de Beaune. It is a pure red wine appellation, and here it is Pinot Noir that plays the leading role. No white wine is made under the Volnay name. The appellation was established as a village AOC in 1937 and lies within the commune of Volnay as well as parts of the neighbouring commune of Meursault.

The name stands for a style in which elegance and finesse take centre stage. Volnay is typically light, fragrant and elegant rather than powerful, with soft tannins, and the wines are usually softer than those from the neighbouring village of Pommard. It is precisely these qualities that have made Volnay a cherished point of reference for wine lovers seeking the more sensitive side of Pinot Noir.

Volnay has no Grand Cru, but in return a long list of premier cru vineyards, including Clos des Chênes and Les Caillerets. An interesting detail is that red wine from the premier cru vineyard Santenots, which physically lies in Meursault, is nonetheless sold under the Volnay name as Volnay-Santenots. This tells us something about how the appellation system in Bourgogne follows the nuances of the soil and the vineyards more than the administrative boundaries alone.

At Copenhagen Wine we carry Volnay exclusively from this one delimited appellation, because it is found only here, in the heart of Bourgogne. Our selection is rooted in this terroir, and it is here you will find the wines that bear the characteristic Volnay style. If you wish to explore further in the same direction, it may be worth discovering the rest of France and the other Bourgogne wines, where Pinot Noir reveals itself in its many different facets.
