The wine tour goes to Italy
Share
We have been on a getaway to wonderful Italy. Italy is of course known for their heavenly food scene, but they are also known for their production of exquisite wine. The country is therefore very close to our hearts, as we import a lot of wonderful wine from here. We do a lot to maintain the good relationship and contact with our suppliers, which is crucial to being able to offer you the selected producers' delicious wines, also in the future - and this means a few annual trips down to the often slightly warmer climes.
Our latest trip to Italy has included both a producer visit and a wine festival – a trip that has therefore offered a lot of good wine and contact with both business partners and other wine enthusiasts like ourselves. Among other things, we visited Mastrojanni in Montalcino, which is located in the eternally beautiful Tuscany. Mastrojanni is known for a towering and stable level for all the wines, and especially the unique single vineyard Brunellos Vigna Loreto and Schiena d'Asino.
Beautiful surroundings make for beautiful wine
In the popular Montalcino wine region there is also Podere le Ripi, which has established itself as a stable top producer in record time. When the biodynamic wine is harvested, it ages in Mittelberger oak barrels in one of the area's most beautiful and unique wine cellars. That cellar is worth a visit in itself.
In all processes, the focus is on protecting the wine and its nuances. The wine is not pumped, but moved by gravity, the cellar is made of natural materials and while the wine is stored it listens to classical music. That is beautiful!
A rising star in the Brunello sky
Then we went to Castello Tricerchi to visit Tommaso – a recognized quality producer with a direct path to the stars. His wines are developing rapidly and, in short, are getting better and better. Among other things, Tommaso makes a great effort to ensure that his Rosso di Montalcino gets its own legs to stand on as a quality wine in its own right - rather than "just" being a little brother to the Brunello.
We also had the opportunity to taste the upcoming 2018 Brunello and you can look forward to it!
We follow developments in the wine world
The trip included a visit to the wine festival "Tutto in un sorso" ("Everything in one sip"), which took place in Montalcino, Tuscany. The world of wine is constantly developing, and ecology and biodynamics in particular are gaining more and more attention among the serious and quality-conscious producers, many of whom are now also starting to deal with natural wine. Natural wine is broad-spectrum and available at several levels. Therefore, our participation in the festival was the perfect opportunity to keep up to date with the latest trends, taste wines and meet a lot of exciting producers from Europe. You can look forward to meeting some of them on this page.
All in all it has been a wonderful trip and we will no doubt be on the road again soon to visit other of our wonderful producers. Therefore, there is not much else to say other than see you soon, dear Italy.
A little tip if your trip goes to Italy
Here at Copenhagen Wine, we would like to wish you a lovely summer! If you are lucky enough that your holiday goes to Tuscany and maybe even the area around Montalcino in Tuscany, we want to give you a little tip - that is not even about wine.
If you need a break from wine tasting and are up for a unique nature experience, you can enter Bagni San Filippo on the GPS. Barely 30 minutes from Montalcino you will find (free) thermal baths out in the forest, where you bathe in natural pools in 35 degree warm mineral water that comes from inside the extinct Monte Amiata volcano. It's a fun and delicious experience!
When you reach the small town, you park along the road with the forest on your right. A path leads you into the forest, where you will find the thermal baths. If you want a slightly more polished environment, you can consider driving past Bagno Vignoni, which is approx. 10 minutes from Bagni San Filippo. On the way up to the town, turn left and down the dirt road you will find the centuries-old natural baths. We promise that after a trip in the warm mineral water you will be refreshed and ready for more wine experiences!
