Collection: Alicante
Alicante is a red grape variety that you might not come across every day, but which has its very own place in the world of wine. The grape is grown in Ribeiro, among other places, and it produces wines with a dark, deep colour and a characterful body. It is a variety that does well and can contribute both structure and colour to a glass of red wine.
At Copenhagen Wine we carry Alicante from Italy, more specifically from Toscana. This is where we source the wines we offer from this grape, and it is a good example of how a grape variety can gain a foothold beyond its original homeland and express itself in its own way depending on terroir and the winemaker's hand.
Alicante can appear both on its own as a single-varietal wine and as part of cuvées, where it adds colour and body. When you choose an Alicante wine, you typically get something with a certain weight and a dark expression in the glass, and that makes it an obvious companion for food with character.
If you are curious to explore lesser-known grape varieties, Alicante is a fine place to begin. The Toscana interpretation we have on our shelves gives you the chance to experience a variety that is not everyday fare in most wine shops, and which offers a different angle on the red palette than the more familiar names. Bring it along to a meal where you want a glass that can hold its own, and give yourself time to let it unfold.
