Bianco dell'Umbria IGT is a regional designation for white wines from Umbria in central Italy. IGT sits at the more relaxed level below DOC and DOCG, and where the stricter appellations impose fixed requirements on grapes and production, the IGT framework gives producers more room to work with the region's white grapes. Umbria is, incidentally, the only Italian region with neither a coastline nor a national border, bordering Toscana and Lazio.

In practice, it is often Grechetto that sets the tone in Umbrian white wines, and the grape appears both on its own and in blends as the backbone of many of the area's fresh wines. Under a Bianco designation you may also encounter international grapes such as Chardonnay, which can contribute extra body to a white wine. The designation is used flexibly and covers everything from light to fuller styles, often with grapes or expressions that fall outside the region's narrower DOC and DOCG rules.

Many producers experiment within the IGT framework. Some use Grechetto to lift the aromatic expression, while others blend in a little Chardonnay to give more body to the traditionally light structure. A few work with fermentation in barrel, and some vinify their best vineyards separately in a more cru-oriented approach.

It is precisely this combination of freedom and Umbrian character that makes Bianco dell'Umbria IGT an interesting entry point if you want to discover the region's white wines beyond the classic appellations. If you want to explore more widely, we also carry red and rosato wines under the regional designation, where native grapes such as Sangiovese and Montepulciano take the lead alongside international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
