This Chianti Classico Gran Selezione has firm, ripe tannins, a beautifully balanced acidity and a full but elegant body, and that makes it made for food with a bit of fat and power. The tannins are softened by fat and protein in game and beef, while the fresh acidity cuts through rich, full-bodied sauces and keeps the mouth awake. The dark-fruited notes of ripe cherry, forest floor and herbs meet good resistance in braised dishes, mushrooms and aged hard cheese, where the intensity matches the wine's depth. Serve it happily with robust, slow-cooked dishes, where both body and structure get something to play up against.

About the wine

Mezzapiaggia is 100% sangiovese from Vagliagli – an area close to Siena, where the grapes achieve a slightly warmer, more fruity, and more structured style. From the two-hectare vineyard Mezzapiaggia, which lies at 250–300 meters altitude and is characterized by ancient sea deposits and clay-rich soil.

Mezzapiaggia has a darker fruit and earthy style than, for example, Elle from Lamole. Here are notes of ripe cherries, forest floor, herbs, and a slight animal edge.

The taste is full-bodied, yet elegant, with a beautifully balanced acidity and firm, ripe tannins, making it ideal for food.

A classic, age-worthy Gran Selezione with power and depth – but without losing the typical sangiovese freshness.

The vineyard is organically farmed, and the grapes are hand-harvested, then traditionally vinified in cement tanks. The skins are allowed to macerate for a full 45 days under a submerged cap, giving the wine extra depth and tannin. After fermentation, the wine is aged for 15 months in large Austrian oak barrels (20 hl) and then rests for an additional 18 months in the bottle before release.

Only about 2,600 bottles of this first vintage (2022) have been made.

The 2022 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna Mezzapiaggia is packed with dark fruit, leather, incense, liquorice, chocolate, menthol and dried herbs. The Mezzapiaggia has come together well since I tasted it last year.

A fresh, fluid red, this exudes dark fruit flavors of blackberry, black cherry, graphite, tar and eucalyptus. A dusty undercurrent of tannins lends support, and the long aftertaste is driven by mouthwatering acidity. Shows lovely harmony.

A ripe, fruity style, slightly cooked, showing aromas of cherry jam and plums offset by balsamic. Medium- to full-bodied, firm and thick, offering muscular tannins, crisp acidity and an austere, fairly balanced finish.
