Collection: César Márquez Pérez
Young winemaker César Márquez Pérez has deep family roots in the Bierzo region. His introduction to winemaking was via uncle Raúl Pérez, and as an apprentice he has worked in the family's vineyards,
and spent time in Mendoza with the Michelini brothers. His own project started in 2015, and here he explores the possibilities of a Burgundy-inspired classification system in Bierzo.
He works with a number of plots with vines over 100 years old around Valtuille de Abajo. The production of all his reds is quite similar and aims to express the unique origins of the grapes from each plot.
His wines are Mencía in a nutshell, where the grapes are partially destemmed and fermented in open vats.
The maceration after fermentation is usually quite long, after which all wines spend 12 months in old barrels before being released the following winter.
Each wine has a unique expression based on soil conditions, altitude and exposure. His fresh and expressive Mencía wines testify to grapes grown in the right place and treated by the right hands. This is a very small producer that only produces around 18,000 bottles annually.
