Collection: Cortona DOC
Cortona DOC is one of the more overlooked wine areas in Toscana, but that is precisely why it is worth getting to know. The appellation lies in the eastern corner of the region, in the province of Arezzo around the old town of Cortona, and was established as a DOC in 1999. It is predominantly a red wine area, and it is especially Syrah that has made Cortona known. In fact, it is here in Italy that Syrah is really allowed to play the leading role.
Where many Tuscan appellations traditionally revolve around Sangiovese, Cortona has a slightly different identity. Here classic Tuscan grapes meet international varieties that have found a new home. Varietal wines are made from at least 85% of the named grape, and among the permitted red varieties you will find, besides Syrah, also Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Pinot Noir. This gives an appellation with a clear profile, where the grape and the producer's hand are allowed to step clearly forward. White wine is also made in the area.
Syrah is the area's calling card, and it is often the one you will meet in the bottle here. These are wines where the sunny Tuscan climate leaves its mark, but where the finesse is rarely lost. For certain categories, including Riserva, special ageing requirements apply, but that is not a rule that covers all wines under the appellation.
At Copenhagen Wine we carry wines from Cortona as part of our Tuscan selection, and Toscana is indeed one of the areas in Italy that we are especially fond of. If you are curious about the grape in other expressions, you can also dive into our selection of Syrah. If you are looking for a red wine with substance and a slightly different angle than the most famous Tuscan names, Cortona is a good place to start.
