Waiheke Island, located east of Auckland in the Hauraki Gulf, is known for its warm and dry mesoclimate, creating ideal conditions for wine production. The island is especially famous for its red wines made from French grape varieties such as syrah, merlot, and cabernet sauvignon, as well as white wines from chardonnay and pinot gris. The Bordeaux-inspired red wines from here are known for their rich and ripe character and are considered among the best in New Zealand.
Man O' War, established in 1993, is situated on the northeastern tip of Waiheke Island and spans over 1,800 hectares with vineyards, beaches, farmland, olive groves, and forests. With 76 individual vineyard plots, each with their unique soil and microclimate, they cultivate a range of grape varieties, including syrah, chardonnay, and Bordeaux varieties.
The winery's philosophy is to let each vineyard/plot speak for itself by minimizing intervention in the winemaking process. This involves natural fermentation, the use of whole clusters during fermentation, and extended skin contact to extract maximum flavor and complexity. After fermentation, the wines are aged in a combination of new and used French oak barrels to add depth without overpowering the natural character of the grapes.
Man O' War's dedication to sustainable practices and their respect for nature is reflected in their wines, which express Waiheke Island's unique terroir. Their wines have been praised for their quality and character, making them an excellent choice for wine lovers seeking authentic and memorable tasting experiences.
