Mencía from Bierzo has a vibrant freshness, fine but present tannins and a mineral, lightly smoky red-fruit profile with a year in oak. The fresh acidity and the soft tannins call for juicy, preferably grilled or pan-fried meat, where the richness rounds off the tannins and the smoky note meets the seared surface. The wine's mineral backbone and earthy character also suit lamb and spicy, charcuterie-based dishes, while its medium-bodied frame keeps the balance without overpowering the food. Serve it at 17-18 degrees, so the tannins feel soft.

About the wine

El Castro de Valtuille is serious and nuanced with insinuating scents from the Mencía grape. The wine is produced with grapes from old vineyards in the village of Valtuille. Fermented with 50% whole bunches in 5,000-liter oak casks and matured in 225- and 500-liter oak vats for about a year. The wine has a profile as a top wine, but is sold at a very affordable price.

It is a lively wine with great freshness and very fine tannins.
