This Barolo is built on Nebbiolo with a powerful, firm tannin structure, high acidity and long aging that has produced a deep and complex wine with notes of tobacco and ripe, dried fruits. The tannins need richness and protein to soften, so you should reach for full-bodied meat and mushroom dishes, where fat and umami meet the structure and make it rounder on the palate. The wine's intensity matches savory braised and aged dishes, where the flavors have enough weight to stand up to it. Avoid, on the other hand, shellfish and eggy or very spicy dishes, which make the tannins seem metallic or harsh.

About the wine

First produced in 1982. From 30 - 50 year old canes from Vigna Rionda, one of the most historic fields in Serralunga. Massolino has 2.3 Ha divided into plots 79-80-81-82-84-85 and 86. The height is 330 meters above sea level. Lots of lime and stone.

One of the iconic wines from Langhe.

After fermentation for 25-30 days on cement, the wine has been aged for 42 months in 30 hl Slavonian oak casks, followed by 2.5 years in bottle.

Critic reviews

98Wine Spectator
Stitched with concentrated flavors of cherry, black currant, plum, tar, iron and tobacco, this red combines power and finesse, with savory notes of eucalyptus and wild rosemary adding detail.
Elegant nose, also of red-cheeked apple, minimal hint of peach, then raspberries, cranberries, in the reverberation a hint of precious wood and sealing wax.

This is a gorgeous wine, and although it could stand more years of aging, you're not wrong to enjoy it in the near or medium term either. The 2017 Barolo Riserva Vigna Rionda is packed tight with dark fruit, but it also shows a delicately savory edge with black licorice and rusty metal. The wine's intensity and the mouthfeel are sublime. Aging sees it go into botte for 36 months followed by another 36 months in bottle before its release. Production is 12,500 bottle
