Collection: Chambertin-Clos de Bèze

Chambertin-Clos de Bèze is a Grand Cru appellation in the commune of Gevrey-Chambertin in Côte de Nuits, the heart of red Bourgogne. The vineyard was classified as Grand Cru in 1937 and covers around 15 hectares in the northern part of Côte d'Or. Here at Copenhagen Wine we carry wines from precisely this appellation, and as is often the case with the greatest names in Bourgogne, you will find them in a manageable but well-chosen selection.

Only red wine is made, based on Pinot Noir. The soil is stony, well-drained limestone with a good proportion of clay, just as in the neighbouring vineyard Chambertin, and that leaves its mark on the style. A wine from here is classic Gevrey: fragrant, full-bodied, concentrated and structured. A particular feature of the appellation is the right that no other vineyard shares in the same direction, namely that wine from Clos de Bèze may also be sold under the name Chambertin. That says something about how closely the two vineyards are linked.

Clos de Bèze is one of France's oldest wine areas, mentioned as early as the year 640, and the long history is felt in the fine-meshed division of the soil in this part of Bourgogne, where location and soil leave their mark on each individual vineyard. What characterises a wine from a place like this is not least time. With an ageing potential of 12 to 30 years, these are wines that may well be allowed to rest in the cellar before they show themselves from their most harmonious side. That gives you the chance to follow a bottle over several years and experience how it develops.

If you are looking for a bottle for a quiet evening with plenty of time and a hearty meat dish, this is where you can begin to look. If you want to explore more broadly, you can delve into our pages on Bourgogne and Frankrig.
