Montalcino – family-run craftsmanship from the southern side
Ferrero is a small, passionate family winery located in Pascena, midway between Sant’Angelo in Colle and Sant’Angelo Scalo on the southern side of Montalcino. The winery was founded in the late 1990s by Claudia and Pablo, driven by a shared love for wine and winemaking.
Today, the entire family is involved in the work. The couple's three daughters, Silvia, Giulia, and Pepita, all actively contribute to the project. Giulia is a trained oenologist and also serves as the lead winemaker at Mastrojanni - an experience that is clearly reflected in Ferrero's precise and balanced style.
Vineyards, altitude, and grapes
Ferrero owns a total of 5.5 hectares of vineyards located at altitudes between 220 and 300 meters above sea level. Three hectares are planted with sangiovese in the area around Sant’Angelo in Colle - from here both Rosso di Montalcino and Brunello di Montalcino are produced.
The southern exposure provides ripe grapes with depth and concentration, but the altitude and soil composition ensure that the wines retain freshness and balance.
Additionally, Ferrero owns vineyards in Montenero d’Orcia, where the grapes for the IGT wine Pepita are grown. This wine is a blend of merlot, cabernet sauvignon, alicante, and montepulciano and offers a more free and personal expression alongside the classic Montalcino wines.
Soil and vineyard work
The soil is primarily calcareous with a high clay content – ideal conditions for quality wine. The compact soil forces the vines to send roots deep down to find nourishment, which contributes to the grapes' complexity and structure.
All work in the vineyards is done manually, so each parcel can be adapted to the individual vintage. Care is taken, with organic fertilizers and respect for the natural balance of the vineyards.
Vinification and aging
The wines are vinified in the family's carefully renovated cellar, which previously served as a stable and barn from the early 1900s. Here, the focus is on preserving the grapes' natural fruit and aromatic clarity.
Rosso and Brunello di Montalcino are aged in large French oak barrels, while the IGT wines mature in tonneaux and barriques. The wood is used sparingly and serves as a frame rather than the main role - always with the wine's identity at the center.
Ferrero at Copenhagen Wine
Ferrero is Montalcino on a small scale: family-run, precise, and without unnecessary interventions. Wines with depth and structure, but also with balance and drinkability - created by people who know their vineyards and work with respect for both tradition and the future.
