Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi is one of the most characterful white wines from Marche in central Italy. The appellation lies west of Jesi, a medieval hilltop town that serves as the gateway to the area, and the vineyards spread out on both sides of the river Esino. In fact, this DOC accounts for more than half of all DOC-classified wine in Marche, so when you are looking for the region's white wine tradition, this is where you will find it.
The grape thrives on soils dominated by crumbly limestone and mineral-rich clay, and most vineyards lie within about thirty kilometres of the Adriatic Sea. At the same time, the area offers higher elevations and cooler conditions than, for example, Soave or Lugana, and you can taste it in the glass. Verdicchio has a high natural acidity that gives the wines freshness and vitality, and a distinct grape character that makes it easy to recognise.
In the glass you will often find notes of green apple and Bosc pear alongside a resinous, almost pine-like impression. Green herbs and a slight bitterness of almond skin emerge on the finish and give the wines their unmistakable signature. The primary style is dry white wine, but the appellation also produces mousserende vin as well as frizzante and frizzantino versions, if you fancy exploring the grape in a lighter, sparkling form.
Modern producers manage yields to achieve fuller and more fruit-driven expressions, and the styles range widely. Some wines see no oak ageing at all and cultivate the grape's pure, fresh side, while others undergo partial or full barrel fermentation. Most, however, choose to balance the influence of the oak so that Verdicchio's delicate aromas are preserved.
Every bottle in this collection comes from precisely this defined appellation in Marche, and the selection reflects the provenance and craftsmanship we hold dear. If you want to explore the grape more broadly, you will find more expressions under Verdicchio. If you are fond of fresh, mineral white wines with personality, this is an obvious grape to get to know more closely.
