Collection: Barbera d'Alba DOC

Barbera d'Alba DOC is a red wine appellation in the Langhe hills around the town of Alba in the province of Cuneo in Piemonte in north-western Italy. The wine is based on the Barbera grape and contains at least 85% Barbera, with the possibility of up to 15% Nebbiolo. The appellation was established as a DOC in 1970, and its production area overlaps with the zones for Barolo and Barbaresco.

Although the vineyards often lie side by side with those that yield the famous Nebbiolo wines, Barbera d'Alba should not be confused with either those or with Barbera d'Asti. Barbera has an identity all its own: the grape is known for high, lively acidity, a deep and intense colour and a distinctly fruit-driven style. It is precisely the freshness and the juicy fruit that make the wine so recognisable.

The style ranges from immediately drinkable bottles to more ambitious versions. The standard Barbera d'Alba has no ageing requirements, while the Superiore version must be aged at least 12 months, of which at least four months in cask. That gives you a selection where you can find both light everyday wines and wines with a little more structure and body.

With its vibrant acidity, Barbera d'Alba is a rewarding companion at the table. It handles everything from pasta with meat sauce to mushroom- and beef-based dishes, and it is precisely the acidity that makes it flexible alongside food. For you who want to discover the breadth of Piemonte without necessarily heading straight for the most famous names, the appellation is an obvious place to begin.

At Copenhagen Wine we carry Barbera d'Alba from its home around Alba. When a grape variety has such a strong connection to one particular place, it makes good sense to let the wines speak with a clear voice about precisely their origin.
