Rosato Toscana IGT is rosé wine from Toscana in central Italy. The IGT designation (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) was introduced in 1992 as a tier between Vino da Tavola and DOC/DOCG, and it was largely created to give the so-called Super Tuscans a quality classification outside the strict DOC and DOCG rules. The rules are freer than under DOC and DOCG, and a wide range of grapes is permitted, including international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah alongside the native varieties. At least 85% of the grapes must come from Toscana.
Under the designation, red wine, white wine and rosato can be made, and sparkling wine has also been allowed. In the rosato the red grapes appear again, often with Sangiovese as the most widespread variety in the region. The grapes are pressed early and given a short skin contact, so the colour turns light and fresh rather than dark and powerful. The result is typically a crisp and fragrant rosato with a fruity core and a clean, refreshing acidity.
It is a wine style that thrives at the table with light dishes, but which also works well as a glass on its own when the weather calls for something cool and unpretentious. You will typically find the clear berry fruit and light body that make the style so easy to approach.
