Cabernet Franc is a blue grape with its roots in Bordeaux in France. With its comparatively small berries, it yields concentrated flavour and typically medium-bodied red wines with an earthy, aromatic expression. Compared with the closely related Cabernet Sauvignon, it has a slightly milder intensity on the palate, which makes it a grape that often plays with both finesse and character.
In France, the grape is known above all from Bordeaux and the Loire Valley. In Bordeaux it classically features as a blending grape, not least in Saint-Émilion and Pomerol, where it contributes complexity alongside the other grapes in the cuvée. You also come across Cabernet Franc in smaller quantities outside France, for example as a minor component in the vineyards of Ribera del Duero. The grape is now grown in many places around the world, and it appears under a long list of synonyms, including Breton and Bouchet.
At Copenhagen Wine, we primarily carry Cabernet Franc from Italy, and the weight clearly lies in Toscana. Here the grape is typically used as part of the blend in the Tuscan red wines, where it adds aromatics and structure. It is a region we hold in high regard for its craftsmanship-driven approach and its sense of terroir, and you notice that in the Tuscan bottles.
Besides Toscana, we also have a few wines from north-eastern Italy, more precisely Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Veneto. These are two areas with their own expressions, and they show that Cabernet Franc can thrive under different conditions within the same country.
If you are looking for a red wine with earthy, aromatic notes and a medium-bodied profile, Cabernet Franc is a good place to start. It works fine on its own, but is just as much in its element as a well-considered part of a blend, where it contributes both aroma and depth.
