Cantine dell'Angelo

Avellino and Tufo - greco di tufo with origin and edge

Campania is located in southern Italy and is known for its rich history, diverse landscape, and distinctive wine regions. East of Naples lies the province of Avellino, a mountainous and lush area, which today is considered one of Southern Italy's most important for quality wine. Here, especially greco di tufo, fiano, and taurasi have put the region on the world map.

Greco di tufo is undoubtedly one of the area's oldest grapes - with roots that can be traced back to the Greek colonization of Southern Italy.

Cantine dell’Angelo and the Muto family

In the heart of the Avellino province, in the municipality of Tufo, lies Cantine dell’Angelo surrounded by steep vineyards and the traces of the area's historical sulfur mines. The winery is currently run by Angelo Muto, the third generation in the family's wine production.

With just five hectares of vineyards, Cantine dell’Angelo manages to create some of the most personal and uncompromising interpretations of greco di tufo. The production is small, around 20,000 bottles annually, but the ambition is clear: to showcase the grape's and the area's unique character without unnecessary interventions.

Vineyards, sulfur, and soil

The vineyards are located directly above the old sulfur mines, where up to 900 people worked in the 1800s. It is precisely this subsoil, rich in natural sulfur, that gives the wines their characteristic minerality, tension, and salty nerve.

The farming is gentle and adapted to the soil's natural composition. There is great respect for the balance of the vineyards, and intervention is only made when necessary.

Vinification and style

The vinification takes place exclusively in steel tanks with gentle pressing and a focus on purity. No barrels are used, as the goal is to preserve the grape's natural expression and the terroir's distinct imprint.

The result is greco di tufo wines with marked freshness, structured acidity, and a characteristic minerality that clearly reflects both the soil and history. Wines with edge, energy, and great personality.

Cantine dell’Angelo at Copenhagen Wine

For us, Cantine dell’Angelo epitomizes greco di tufo at its most honest and terroir-driven. Wines that do not seek the polished, but the precise - and that clearly show why Avellino and Tufo are among Campania's most interesting wine regions.

For wine lovers who appreciate high minerality, structure, and authenticity.
