Etna Rosato DOC is a rosé wine from the eastern slopes of Etna in Sicily, where the vineyards lie on the flanks of an active volcano. The grape behind it is Nerello, which here yields a rosé with a clear imprint from the soil and the altitude in which it grows.
It is precisely the terroir that makes Etna something special. Where the rest of Sicily is often associated with heat and sun, Etna offers a cool, humid and almost continental climate. The volcanic soil combined with the high elevation of the vineyards creates entirely distinct growing conditions, and at the higher levels chestnuts and pines grow side by side with the vines. It is a contrast you rarely find elsewhere on the island.
On Etna more than rosé is made. The red wines, which like the rosés come from Nerello, are full-bodied and fruity, while the whites combine Catarratto with Carricante, a grape variety entirely unique to Sicily, and sometimes also Trebbiano. The white wines are aromatic, fresh and relatively light in body, and they tend to be more aromatic and fresh than those from the neighbouring area of Alcamo. This gives a good picture of Etna's signature: freshness and expression over weight.
