The Princess's 2016 Riserva, which has now been released 1 year after the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino.
When you choose to age the wine for 4 years in large barrels and one year in steel, it simply cannot be released earlier.
It should be compared to great Brunellos, as that is the level we are at.
Absolutely fantastic Sangiovese expression with great elegance and adequate power. The wine, like all wines from Castell'in Villa, is cool in style.
No taste of oak here. Exceptional balance and acidity, and the wine has the longevity of a great Brunello di Montalcino.
The vines are from the mid-1960s.

This is a cool, energetic Sangiovese with lively acidity, moderate but firm tannins and a core of tart cherry and red berries. The acidity cuts beautifully through richness and salt, so it handles both charcuterie and pasta with meat without becoming heavy, while the tannins find a companion in the rich protein of grilled and braised meat. The earthy notes of rosemary, leather and minerality play nicely off Tuscan classics and aged hard cheese, where the cheese's fat and protein soften the tannins. Serve it at 17-18 degrees, so the tannins feel round rather than tight.

The 2016 Chianti Classico is a wine that almost belongs in its own category, as it has very little to do with most straight Chianti Classicos. Powerful, classically austere and so incredibly beautiful, the 2016 is a total stunner.
