This velvety-smooth Gevrey-Chambertin has medium body, soft tannin and fresh acidity, which makes it incredibly flexible at the table. The moderate tannin and beautiful red fruit suit fatty, but not too powerful proteins like duck and pork, where the fruit balances the richness without turning astringent. At the same time, Pinot Noir is the most cheese-friendly red grape, so aged sheep's and cow's milk cheeses fall completely in line with the wine's acidity and earthy minerality. The licorice note and the restrained oak influence speak nicely with lightly smoked and cured fare that mirrors the wine's earth-driven character.

About the wine

Since 2004, Philippe Drouhin has been vinifying the grapes from this small 1st Cru, located on the south side of the village between Clos St. Jacques and Mazis-Chambertin.

The soil at Le Craipillot is covered with particularly many pebbles (craie), which affect the microclimate and later the minerality of the wines.

It is a plot of just 2.7 ha. of which Drouhin-Laroze disposes of 0.26 ha. The plot was planted in two rounds in the years 1943 and 1953.

The wine matures after fermentation in 40% new oak casks from Allier and Nivernais with medium roasting to give the wine a restrained and harmonious cask character.

The color is intense garnet red. The aroma is beautiful dark fruits and woody vanilla. The taste is red berries, especially blackcurrants and a hint of licorice.

A subdued nose holds promise of rather ripe, fully-fledged cherry fruit. The palate then gives a full, aromatic, glorious picture of juicy fruit, ripe but fresh, captured at its apex. Tannins are firm and have the gently brushing texture of a cat's paw. The very picture of Gevrey. Juicy, wonderful. expressive.
