This Gevrey-Chambertin is a velvety and harmonious Pinot Noir with medium body, moderate tannins, and a fresh acidity that makes it incredibly versatile at the table. The moderate tannins and soft texture flatter rich, but not too heavy, proteins, where they gently cut through the richness without turning tight. The wine's earthy minerality and notes of red berries, blackcurrant, and licorice play beautifully against mushrooms, truffle, and mature cheeses, while the fresh acidity keeps it all elegant and in balance. Serve it with dishes in the same weight class, so that wine and food appear as equal partners.

About the wine

Since 2004, Philippe Drouhin has been vinifying the grapes from this small 1st Cru, located on the south side of the village between Clos St. Jacques and Mazis-Chambertin.

The soil at Le Craipillot is covered with particularly many pebbles (craie), which affect the microclimate and later the minerality of the wines.

It is a plot of just 2.7 ha. of which Drouhin-Laroze disposes of 0.26 ha. The plot was planted in two rounds in the years 1943 and 1953.

The wine matures after fermentation in 40% new oak casks from Allier and Nivernais with medium roasting to give the wine a restrained and harmonious cask character.

The color is intense garnet red. The aroma is beautiful dark fruits and woody vanilla. The taste is red berries, especially blackcurrants and a hint of licorice.

This wine shows restraint and elegance, and yet everything is in the right place. The impression begins with ripe mulberry fruit aromas accented with notes of smoke, leather, and earth, yet there is no rustic edge.
