This Brunello has ripe tannins, fresh acidity and lovely body, and that makes it a classic partner for rich and flavorful food, where the tannins are welcome to play off against both protein and fat. The ripe cherry fruit, the dried herbs and the fine balsamic notes pull toward Tuscan cuisine with herbs, mushrooms and grilled meat, while the lively acidity cuts through the fat and keeps the flavor fresh. Feel free to choose dishes with a little depth and a touch of bitterness, so the wine's elegant structure has something to work with.

About the wine

Sangiovese from 280 meters altitude at Castelnuovo dell'Abate in the southeastern part of Montalcino - a sought-after area with a terroir that ranks among the most recognized in the appellation, where several of Montalcino's great Brunello producers are based. Here, Monte Amiata has a significant impact on the local climate, protecting the vineyards while the cool air currents contribute to a slow and even ripening of the grapes. This results in Sangiovese with beautiful maturity, freshness, and the particular elegance that characterizes the area.

In the glass, Montefocaia shows ripe cherry fruit and dark red berries accompanied by spices, dried herbs, and fine balsamic nuances.

The taste has good depth and intensity with ripe tannins, fresh acidity, and a long, persistent finish. The wine has a beautiful fullness, yet the finesse and elegance that characterize Sangiovese from this part of Montalcino.

2021 has already established itself as one of the truly strong vintages in Montalcino. The warm and dry summer provided grapes with beautiful maturity and depth, while a lively acidity and ripe tannins have preserved the wine's freshness and balance. The vintage shows both intensity, finesse, and energy and has the structure and harmony that offer excellent potential for wines with a very long life.

After hand-harvesting, the grapes are carefully sorted, and only the best are selected for further vinification. The grapes macerate with the skins for a minimum of 25 days before the wine undergoes 36 months of aging in large oak barrels from Mittelberger, selected with a particular focus on quality and long maturation. The wine is then further aged for a minimum of 6 months in the bottle before release.

The result is a harmonious and characterful Brunello with beautiful fullness, freshness, and depth.

The wine already shows great class and is fantastic to drink, but it also has the balance and structure to develop beautifully over many years in the cellar.

Serve preferably in large glasses.
