Cascina Roccalini

Barbaresco – Craftsmanship, Calm, and Tradition in Roccalini

Cascina Roccalini is situated alone in the small village of Roccalini, north of Alba and near the eastern bank of the Tanaro River. The estate is beautifully located in the chalky hills overlooking Barbaresco and surrounded by about 20 hectares of land. The property has roots dating back to the Napoleonic era and still houses its own small chapel - a testament to the site's long history.

Here you meet Paolo Veglio and his mother Luciana. With Cascina Roccalini, Paolo became the first in his family to make wine production his actual profession.

From Grape Supplier to Own Production

Before Paolo took over the estate, the family sold the grapes to some of the area's most renowned producers - including Bruno Giacosa. Paolo grew up in the countryside with one clear goal: to make wine. He completed his oenological studies in 1998 and began working seriously in the family's vineyards in 2003.

Already in 2005, the first vintage under the name Cascina Roccalini was presented. In the early phase, Paolo received professional support from Dante Scaglione, who for many years was an oenologist at Bruno Giacosa and a central figure in modern Barbaresco history.

Vineyards, Nature, and Balance

Out of the estate's approximately 20 hectares, only about 4.7 hectares are planted with vines. The rest consists of forest, fruit, and nut trees, creating a balanced and vibrant ecosystem around the vineyards. This approach is central to Paolo Veglio, who sees healthy soil and biodiversity as prerequisites for great wines.

The grapes are grown organically, and all work in the vineyard is done manually. No herbicides or synthetic products are used, and the focus is consistently on the quality of the grapes and preserving the area's natural character.

Vinification and Philosophy

Paolo Veglio consciously goes his own way. His philosophy is not based on high yields or maximum profit, but on calm and uncompromising craftsmanship rooted in classic Piedmontese traditions.

The wines are spontaneously fermented with their own wild yeast cells and mature slowly in large oak barrels. There is no filtration or fining, and sulfur is used in very modest amounts.

The result is wines with a clear terroir imprint, great purity, and a natural elegance. Barbaresco with structure, but also with lightness and high drinkability - wines that feel alive and honest.
