Matteo Fenoglio

Alta Langa - sparkling wines with depth

There are places where silence hangs in the air like dew, and where the landscape speaks louder than people. Serravalle Langhe, 750 meters above sea level, is one of them. Here, in Piedmont's raw and almost undisturbed heights, Matteo Fenoglio has chosen to let his vines take root.

The area is part of Alta Langa - cool, unpredictable, and long underrated. A place where wine cannot be forced but must grow at its own pace. It was precisely here that Matteo found his expression.

A self-taught winemaker with patience as a method

Matteo was born and raised in Serravalle Langhe, surrounded by forests, hills, and hazelnut groves. Although he trained as a chemist and worked with laboratory analyses, something else drew him. At 25, he left his job and returned to the land.

He started with hazelnuts, like his grandparents before him, and slowly moved into the world of wine. Without manuals and without dogmas. He is self-taught and says himself that mistakes were his best teachers.

Vineyards at altitude and work without shortcuts

In 2013, Matteo planted his first vines: pinot nero and chardonnay, on a total of three hectares. Alta Langa was still a niche area at the time - too high, too cool, and too demanding for many. For Matteo, it was precisely here that he could create wines with authenticity and personality.

From the beginning, the work has been organic. No synthetic chemicals are used in the vineyard and no additives in the cellar. All work is done manually - from winter pruning to disgorgement. The wines undergo metodo classico - with secondary fermentation in the bottle and aged for a minimum of 36 months on lees before release.

The result is sparkling wines with depth, calm, and a remarkable balance between energy and precision.

Parèj - Balance

Matteo's wine is called Parèj, Piedmontese for "even" or "in balance". The name is not accidental. It is precisely what he seeks: harmony between terroir and grape, between tradition and personality.

The wine is mainly based on pinot nero, supplemented with a small amount of moscato d’amburgo from an old vine planted by his grandfather. The moscato is matured in used barriques, and the bottles are disgorged à la volée - without frozen necks and by hand. A demanding method, chosen deliberately because it gives the wine more life and character.

The label and the man behind it

The label is drawn by the Albanian artist Mauro Rosso and is inspired by Matteo himself: passionate, stubborn, a bit wild - and often riding through the landscape on his horse.

Matteo Fenoglio does not make wines to impress. He makes wines that make sense where they come from. Quiet, honest, and deeply rooted in the heights of Alta Langa.

Matteo Fenoglio at Copenhagen Wine

Matteo Fenoglio was an insider tip to us from our good friend Walter Lodali. Several renowned producers in Piedmont - including Gaja, Rinaldi, and Lodali - have Matteo's wines as their house wine. The wine they drink themselves when bubbles are to be opened.

Today, Parèj can also be found in some of the area's best wine bars and restaurants - but always in very limited quantities. Production is small, demand is high, and the wines are primarily traded among those who know what they are looking for.

Matteo Fenoglio is in many ways a Piedmontese secret that we have been allowed to share. A wine we are both genuinely happy for - and proud to have been introduced to.

It is sparkling wine with character and personality - and quite frankly - insanely good!
