This mature Burgundy has a medium body, moderate tannin, and a bright acidity, and the earthy notes of truffles and violets are the key to the table. The acidity and the soft tannin follow richness and finesse without taking over, so you get the best interplay with dishes that match the wine's elegant intensity rather than drowning it out. Choose earthy, umami-rich preparations like mushrooms, truffle, and mature poultry or game, where the shared flavors play together. Pinot Noir is among the most cheese-friendly reds, so mature sheep's and cow's milk cheeses also fall naturally in line with the wine's structure.

About the wine
Acquired in 1919 by Gaston Grivot. The average age of the vines is 40 years. Low yields, but sublime quality.
The famous Dr. Morelot said that "Clos de Vougeot, Romanée, Chambertin and some others are the best wines of the Côte d'Or and perhaps the best in France".
Grivots Clos de Vougeot is a full-bodied, powerful wine that is sometimes a little raw. It is robust when young and needs time to mature and develop finesse and elegance. Normally it should have approx. 10 years to open up. When matured, it is a generous, velvety wine, full of truffles and scents of violets.

Cask sample. Really lively and fun. So much fruit and life! No rough edges. This does taste like a (spookily approachable) grand cru.

Inside Burgundy
70% crop achieved, so perhaps the helicopter treatment worked. A deeper dense purple, with a serious concentration of fruit here. Then darker fruit, almost a chocolate nose, a little foursquare as per its terroir, small waves of darker fruit coming through behind, a dark plum for example, then an evenly balanced finish between fruit, tannin and acidity.
