Grifalco Daginestra Aglianico del Vulture Superiore DOCG 2021

Single vineyard wine from Ginestra at an altitude of 580 meters on the slopes of Monte Vulture.

The wild broom plant – ginestra – grows naturally in the area and is part of the rugged and volcanic landscape surrounding the vineyard. This wine has a strong connection to its place of origin.

The 60–70 year old vines are densely planted on soil characterized by volcanic ash with traces of limestone and clay. The combination of altitude, old vines, and mineral-rich subsoil creates a wine with notable structure and cool precision.

In the glass, the wine appears deep and dense ruby red. The nose is intense with dark cherries, black plums, and dried herbs, followed by tobacco, spices, and a distinctive, almost graphite-like minerality.

The taste is delightfully concentrated and firm with ripe, yet pronounced tannin structure and a vibrant acidity that provides length and balance. The extended maceration and aging in Slavonian oak add depth without overshadowing the grape's natural expression.

This is a wine suited for braised beef, game, and lamb, or dishes with intense umami. It can be enjoyed young with good aeration, but it has significant aging potential.

The wine is made from 100% organically certified aglianico from vines planted at 8,000 plants per hectare and trained in the Guyot system. Harvesting is done manually with strict selection in the vineyard and further sorting in the cellar.

After gentle destemming, the must ferments in 5,500-liter Slavonian oak casks at temperatures below 28 degrees Celsius. Maceration lasts more than 60 days, during which malolactic fermentation also takes place. The wine then matures for 12–18 months in Slavonian oak and at least 12 months in the bottle before release.
