This Brunello is an elegant and slender sangiovese with red, fresh fruit, floral notes and an energetic acidity, carried by moderate, well-matured tannin and a medium-bodied frame. The acidity cuts through fat and juiciness, while the tannin finds its counterpoint in a bit of animalistic richness, so you get the most out of the wine with dishes that have a round texture without being too heavy. Think classic Tuscan traditions like aged beef, herb-seasoned poultry and mushroom dishes, where earthy, umami-rich flavors meet the wine's clarity. The airy, almost carefree style means you may well hold back on the very most powerful and intense food, so the wine's finesse isn't run over.

About the wine

Passo del Lume Spento is the house's newest parcel and at the same time the highest located Brunello plot in all of Montalcino, a full 621 meters above sea level. The vineyard was first approved for Brunello in 2017, and here the Sangiovese vines are unconventionally planted in gobelet, growing freely without trellising.

The altitude and open growth form give a particularly elegant and airy expression, with red, fresh fruit, floral notes, and a light, almost "unrestrained" feeling that distinguishes the wine from Ragnaie's other Brunelli. There is a discreet natural wine vibrancy to the expression, without the wine losing purity or structure.

As always at Le Ragnaie, the wine is fermented with natural yeast in concrete and aged 36 months in large Slavonian botti. The result is an extremely fine and upright Brunello with clarity, energy, and great aging potential. The production is very limited.
