Barbaresco from Nebbiolo has a fine, translucent body, moderate but present tannins and a fresh acidity that lifts both richness and umami. The tannins are softened by fat and protein, so dishes with tender meat, long braises and good fattiness play beautifully against the wine's elegance. At the same time, the acidity makes it well suited to mushroom dishes and charcuterie, where it cuts through and keeps the palate fresh. Avoid very heavily spiced food, which easily clashes with the firm tannins and the bright fruit.

About the wine

Here is Massolino's first single vineyard wine from Neive in Barbaresco. Albesani MGA, which is a corner of the iconic Santo Stefano, is the field where Dante Scaglione, as a consultant, has been the man behind Bruno Giacosa's absolutely fantastic Barbaresco wines.

Fortunately, Dante Scaglioni is also a consultant for Massolino, and how many people know this field better than Dante?

Massolino has 2 ha from Albesani. The sticks are approx. 50 years old and stands 230 meters above sea level.

This wine is produced in a completely traditional way. After long fermentation in Slavonian oak, the wine has matured for 18 months in a large Slavonian oak cask.

The wine exudes great elegance, and you are met by the scent of red fruits from the light wine. The wine is deep and complex at the same time, and it really shows off the Albesani terroir at its best.

The quantity of this wine is unfortunately very limited.

Full of restraint on the nose, with smoky woodland, macerated flowers and chocolate wrapped up in a fresh, elegant redcurrant fruit. Very savoury on the palate, with fresh acidity and velvety, chewy, youthful tannins which are extremely precise and woven into the finish.

From the village of Neive, the Massolino 2020 Barbaresco Albesani shows more balance at this young age next to the estate's classic Barbaresco. This single-vineyard expression also has more depth with dark berry nuances, cassis, blue flower and crushed limestone.

The 2020 Barbaresco Albesani has more substance and depth than the straight Barbaresco. The differences between the two wines today aren't that marked at the outset, but that comes with aeration. Macerated cherry, plum, spice, lavender, rose petal and sage develop with time in the glass.
