This is a medium-bodied Spanish red wine with a mineral backbone, soft texture, and a core of red fruits, where the old vines and the natural vinification lend a lightly smoky, earthy character. The tannins are ripe and rounded, so they play nicely alongside fatty proteins without turning coarse, while the fresh fruit keeps the dish lively. You'll get the best experience with dishes of the same medium-bodied weight, ideally with a bit of grill or a seared crust that grabs hold of the wine's smoky notes. Steer clear of the very fatty cheese and chocolate corner, which settles like a film and mutes both fruit and tannin.

About the wine

Castro Ventosa Valtuille La Vitoriana is a single-field wine from the field La Vitoriana.

La Vitoriana is one of the most emblematic vineyards in Valtuille, whose 4 hectares are distributed among only 5 owners.

The vineyards, with vines over 120 years old, are probably the oldest in Valtuille.

The field located at the foot of the archaeological site of Castro de la Ventosa is one of the best hidden in Valtuille.

The grapes are harvested manually in the first harvest days each year. On arrival at the vineyard, the whole grapes are deposited in a 3,000 liter foudre (wooden barrel). The fermentation takes place naturally without the addition of yeast and without temperature control. After 60 days of maceration without the use of pumps, the wine matures in used barrels for one year.

The second vintage of La Vitoriana here, the 2019 Valtuille La Vitoriana fermented in a 1,000-liter oak vat and matured in a 500-liter oak barrel—different from the 2018, which matured in a smaller barrel. Perhaps the ratio of oak to wine has played well for this wine, which feels more elegant and harmonious, fresher and less concentrated. The ripeness is a little lower here than in the 2018; the old vines with low yields tend to ripen quickly, so you have a short window to pick the grapes. This finished with 13.4% alcohol and has a medium body with fine, chalky tannins. Really impressive. 620 bottles produced.
