Passorosso 2024 is Andrea Franchetti's vibrant portrait of Etna, created from old nerello mascalese vines with an average age of 100 years.
The grapes come from various contradas on the north side of Etna, where the vineyards are situated between 550 and 800 meters in elevation. The soil ranges from fine volcanic dust to lava stones of various sizes, and Passorosso captures these different elevations and volcanic terroirs in a single expression.
The wine opens with a deep and elegant aroma of red berries, spices, and fine mineral nuances. The taste is vibrant and juicy with beautiful acidity, silky tannins, and a salty, mineral nerve. An elegant and harmonious Etna Rosso that is already incredibly inviting but also has the structure to develop beautifully over the coming years.
In the cellar, extraction is gentle with just 8-9 days of maceration and fermentation at a maximum of 26-28°C. The wine is primarily aged in large oak barrels, while a smaller portion is aged in cement.
2024 offered a warm and dry summer, but especially the high-altitude vineyards delivered beautiful and generous grapes. The harvest of nerello mascalese took place from October 3rd to 11th.
Passorosso is classified as Etna Rosso DOC and is a wine that combines elevation, soil, and Franchetti's unique interpretation of Etna into a clear expression.
