Carlo Giacosa

Barbaresco - nebbiolo with finesse, structure, and continuity

The family-owned winery Carlo Giacosa is located in the heart of Barbaresco in Piedmont and produces fine Barbaresco wines from some of the area's most renowned crus, including Ovello, Montefico, and Asili.

For four generations, the family has worked purposefully to cultivate nebbiolo and convey the area's unique terroir through wines with elegance, precision, and aging potential.

The winery was continued by Carlo Giacosa, who took over the estate from his father and continued the work on the hilly slopes around the village of Barbaresco. Today, the winery is run by his daughter Maria Grazia and grandson Luca, who carry on the family's traditions with the same respect for craftsmanship and the area's history.

Experience and expertise

Giacosa works with advice from Dante Scaglione, one of Piedmont's most respected winemakers. Scaglione is especially known for his long-standing work with the legendary Bruno Giacosa, where he made a significant impact on some of the most iconic wines from the 1990s onwards.

This combination of the family's local roots and Scaglione's professional weight gives the wines both continuity and precision.

Vineyards and crus in Barbaresco

The Giacosa family is particularly recognized for their Barbaresco wines, which are among the most classic and terroir-driven in the area. The winery's vineyards include parcels in Asili and Ovello - two of the most prestigious crus in Barbaresco.

Asili and Ovello are known for producing nebbiolo with great finesse, aromatic clarity, and significant aging potential. Soil, exposure, and microclimate give wines that combine structure and elegance in an excellent way.

Style and expression

The wines from Giacosa exhibit classic Barbaresco characteristics with aromas of red fruits, rose petals, spices, and a subtle earthy minerality. The tannins are pronounced but well-integrated, and the acidity gives the wines tension and balance.

In addition to Barbaresco, Giacosa also produces pinot nero, langhe nebbiolo, barbera d’alba, and dolcetto d’alba. Common to the wines is a pure expression and a clear ambition to let the grape and terroir speak without unnecessary intervention.

Sustainability and vineyard work

Sustainability is a natural part of the family's approach to wine production. They work with environmentally friendly methods in the vineyard, including the use of natural fertilizers, limited use of chemical pesticides, and great respect for biodiversity in the vineyards.

The goal is not to follow trends, but to ensure healthy vineyards and stable expressions year after year.
