Santenay lies south of Chassagne-Montrachet and marks the end of the Côte d'Or wine region.

In recent years, the municipality has become quite a popular appellation. Developments in recent years with better equipment and new production techniques have made the wines from here far better and more refined than before, when the wines were more rustic.

Santenay has now gone and become the new place for "Burgundy lovers" who appreciate quality at a good price.

Both the red and white wines are excellent buys, especially when compared to the sky-high prices of similar wines from the Côte de Nuits.

Pinot Noir is the most important grape in Santenay and makes up the majority of total production. The wines here are somewhat reminiscent of a cross between Chassagne and Pommard with lots of red berries, good acid balance and body. They are charming and very drinkable.

Chardonnay is the typical white grape in the municipality. The white wines from Santenay are full-bodied and nutty and show in the most elegant way what can be done in the appellation. We experience lots of nice acidity, minerality, classy fruit and a fine finish - and not least an excellent quality/price ratio.

Domaine Lucien Muzard & Fils is run by a dedicated trio. The brothers Claude and Hervé Muzard took over in 1990, as the ninth generation, responsibility for the family domain. Since 2019, Claude's daughter Capucine, who is a trained oenologist, has also been part of the team.

The vineyard has a total of 16 hectares, the majority of which can be found in Santenay. The fields in Santenay are on average 55 years old, including 1st cru Maladière and Gravières, as well as Champs Claude which is "village".

Over the years, the two brothers have expanded with a nice selection of terroirs in both Maranges, Puligny, Chassagne, Pommard and Meursault.

The wines from the domain show the "new style" of Santenay in the best possible way. The wines from here are clearly at the elegant end of the spectrum. The red fruits are highlighted nicely, and delivered with a beautiful balance. The whites are aromatic and energetic and are among the finest available from the Côte d'Or.

All the wines from Muzard are matured in oak barrels with a distribution, depending on the vintage, of 30 to 40% new barrels respectively.

The workflow at the vineyard long-term. Ecological approach and quality are fundamental in everything they do.

The vinification is done partly with whole bunches to preserve the freshness and fine floral character that can be recognized from the vineyard.

All the wines from Muzard are matured in oak barrels with a distribution, depending on the vintage, of 15 to 30% new barrels respectively.

The working process at the winery is organic and they have had certification since 2011. The focus is 100% on uncompromising quality.

The domaine delivers a furiously beautiful level, and it is one of the absolute best that we have tasted from Santenay. Really great value for money. Master of wines, Clive Coates has recognized the domain to be "Top Ten Best Value Burgundy".

The wines are characterized by a crisp and rich moisture with elegance, substance and lots of potential.
